Four weeks

It started with a newspaper report that Daniel had read. A woman had lain dead in her flat for four weeks before anyone found her. She wasn’t forgotten. She had neighbours, she had family. It was just that nobody had a reason to check.

What stayed with us wasn’t the death but the number. Four weeks. And the question that follows from it: how long would it take for us? For the people we care about?

We looked for something that answered that question. What we found was either built for the acute emergency, with a button and a monitoring centre, or required someone to see your location all the time. For what we were looking for there was nothing: a small, regular sign, and a message to the right people when it doesn’t come. So we built it.

What we stick to

  • No live tracking

Ondira never follows you and never locates you in the background. Only if you switch it on yourself does the app send your location once, at the moment you check in, so your contacts know where to look in an emergency; only the latest one is kept, with no continuous tracking and no history.

  • Paid by subscription, not by data

The daily check-in is free; Ondira Plus costs CHF 3 a month or CHF 30 a year. No ads, no advertising identifiers, no data sales, because an app that knows when you’re there must not live off that.

  • Calm, not alarmist

First a reminder to you, then a measured email to your contacts. No red banners, no panic.

  • Honest about the limits

Ondira is not an emergency service and not a medical device. Where a personal alarm is the better fit, we say so.

Why Ondira deliberately knows so little

Technically it would be easy to collect more: movement data, activity, sleep. We decided against it. A sign of life should say “I’m here”, not “this is where I was and what I did”. The person checking in stays in charge.

We do the same on this website. Statistics run on Umami, without cookies and without personal profiles, and our font is hosted on our own server rather than by Google Fonts. Exactly what the app stores is set out on our privacy and security page.
