For anyone who lives alone
You stay independent. Nobody watches you.
You live alone, happily and for good reasons. With Ondira you check in with a single tap on your own schedule. Only if that sign of life doesn’t arrive does someone you trust hear about it.
Free version · Plus CHF 3 a month or CHF 30 a year
Living alone doesn’t mean being left alone
Living alone gives you space, freedom and your own rhythm.
Still, you may wonder who would notice if you couldn’t get in touch. Nobody necessarily has a daily reason to check, even when people care.
With Ondira you give a brief, regular sign of life. If it is still missing after a reminder, someone you trust receives an email. No live tracking.
“I don’t need anyone looking after me. I just want someone to notice if something ever does happen.”
How your daily check-in works
A few minutes to set up. After that, you’re the one in charge.
Choose your schedule
You decide how often you check in, for example every day or every other day.
Tap “I’m here”
One tap in the app or via the web link, and your contacts hear nothing.
You get a reminder first
If you miss the deadline, Ondira reminds you first, by push notification and email.
Then someone you trust is told
If the reminder goes unanswered too, your contacts receive a calm email, in the order you set.
What might still be holding you back
- “I don’t want to be a burden.”
- That’s why Ondira works this way. As long as you check in, nobody receives anything. Your contacts don’t have to do, watch or install anything. They’re only needed when it matters.
- “I’ll forget, I know I will.”
- Then Ondira reminds you first, before anyone else is told. A time that fits your routine helps, such as after your first coffee. If daily feels like too much, pick a different rhythm.
- “I don’t want anyone knowing where I am.”
- Nobody will. Ondira has no live tracking and no background location. The app only sends your location if you switch that on yourself, and only at the moment you check in. By default, your contacts only learn whether you checked in.
- “What if I travel, or my phone dies?”
- The app needs a brief internet connection to check in. If you’re going away, set a longer rhythm beforehand. If your battery is flat, you get the reminder first. Your contacts’ email says clearly that a missed check-in needn’t mean anything.
- “I’m young and fit, why would I need this?”
- Good. Ondira isn’t built for one stage of life. An accident at home or a nasty bout of flu can happen to anyone. A check-in costs you two seconds a day.
What Ondira isn’t
Not a personal alarm
Ondira doesn’t call a control centre or an ambulance. In an emergency, dial 144 or 112. Ondira covers the moment when you can no longer call anyone yourself.
Not surveillance
No live tracking, no movement history, no camera, no microphone. Location only if you choose to send it when you check in.
Not a medical device
Ondira measures nothing, doesn’t detect falls and doesn’t replace medical care or nursing support.
Your data, your decision
As little data as possible
Name, email, contacts, settings and a 14-day check-in history. No health data, no advertising IDs, no data sales.
Designed for FADP/GDPR compliance
Built around the Swiss Data Protection Act and the GDPR. Server location: Switzerland.
You stay in control
You choose the contacts, the schedule and whether a location goes along. You can delete your account in the app at any time.

Daniel Diehm read about a woman who lay undiscovered in her flat for four weeks. She had family and neighbours, but nobody had a reason to check. Out of that, he and Oliver Gepp made Ondira. The story behind it

Common questions about living alone safely
What happens if I fall and live alone and can’t reach my phone?
Your next check-in won’t arrive. Ondira reminds you first, then emails your trusted contacts. How quickly depends on your schedule: with a daily check-in, a missed sign of life is noticed within a day. For immediate help after a fall, a personal alarm is the right tool.
Is there an app that alerts someone if I don’t check in?
Yes, that’s what Ondira does. You check in on a fixed schedule. If you don’t, you get a reminder first, then the people you’ve chosen get an email. No control centre is called.
How do I send a daily check-in?
Open Ondira and tap “I’m here”. You can also use a web link from the app or the email. You set the rhythm and a quiet time for the night yourself.
Is Ondira a dead man’s switch app?
At its core, yes. A dead man’s switch triggers something when an expected action doesn’t happen, and with Ondira that action is your check-in. The difference: Ondira reminds you first and writes to your contacts calmly, without sirens or alarm tones.
Do my contacts need the app as well?
No. An email address is enough. They can use a link to confirm they’ve reached you and that you’re fine.
Is Ondira suitable for older people living alone?
Yes, if a smartphone or tablet is part of everyday life. Ondira is meant for any age: for people who live alone and want to decide for themselves who learns what, and when.
How much does Ondira cost?
The daily check-in is free in the free version. Ondira Plus costs CHF 3 a month or CHF 30 a year and adds more contacts, rhythms every 8 or 12 hours, a weekly schedule and pause mode.
Living alone, with a safety net you set up yourself
Pick your rhythm and add one or two people you trust. The rest of the day is yours.
Setting Ondira up for someone else? Install it together on the phone of the person who checks in.
Free version, no credit card. Plus can be cancelled for the end of the term.
